I keep intending to change my career, but then it goes nowhere…

So does this sound familiar?

You wake up one morning and decide “right that’s it, I’m finally going to do something about my career”.

You’re going to find a new direction, or get that promotion, or take a leap and start your own business, either on the side of your 9 to 5 or full time.

But then the fear creeps in and you start thinking “well, maybe things aren’t as bad as I think they are. I’ll keep going a bit longer and see how it goes”.

And suddenly it’s 3 months later and nothing has changed.

And you’re a bit frustrated with yourself for having not taken action.

Well don’t worry, you’re definitely not alone in this.

Often my clients tell me that they’ve decided to try coaching, because they’ve been through this cycle of thinking too many times:

Reach breaking point. Plan to change. Get scared. Back away.

It’s exhausting. And I know how it feels because I went through the cycle many times before making my own career change.

Finding a new career or starting a new business isn’t easy. It feels like a risk and you don’t know what will happen if you take that leap.

But here’s a thought:

You do know what will happen if you don’t take the leap.

Nothing at all.

However, if you start taking some baby steps and gaining momentum, then something will start to happen. and if the status quo is making you really unhappy, then something changing is better than nothing changing.

If you want help creating an action plan, and need some support and accountability along the way to make sure you stick to it, then just get in touch to book an introductory 45min coaching session for just £97.

Is THIS what has been holding you back?

I want to set you up for success so let’s have a little look at some of the things which might have held you back this year:

Do you ever pay close attention to the tone of your thoughts?

There’s a famous quote from Ghandi which says:

We’re often much harder on ourselves than we would be to a friend or family member, and it’s these negative thoughts that might be currently creating your reality.

Do any of these sound familiar?

    •    I'm not clever enough.
    •    I'm too old
    •    I’m too fat
    •    I'm not confident enough.
    •    I don’t have relevant experience.
    •    I'm terrible with money
    •    Successful people are just lucky
    •    My partner wouldn’t like that
    •    My friends wouldn’t like me anymore

It’s key that you end this loop of negative thoughts, and get your thinking in line with your goals and dreams if you want to actually achieve them.

1. The first step is awareness. An exercise that I ask my clients to do is to observe their thoughts for 48 hours and write down what they notice, in a diary, journal or the notes app on their phone.  You may notice that the language is a lot harsher than you expected, but don’t worry, there is a way to start changing it.

2. Once you’re aware of the particular words and thoughts that keep coming up, flip them around. So think of the opposite, more positive version of that. For example, if you keep telling yourself “It’s too late for me, I can’t change careers now”, then the opposite might be ”It’s never too late, and I have lots of relevant life and professional experience that will be extremely valuable in my new business.”

3. Keep repeating them to yourself, and start to flood your mind with more positive thoughts. Give it a try and see how it starts to affect your outlook and how you feel about reaching your goals.

This is going to be YOUR year!

WANT TO BEAT PROCRASTINATION? Then read this

Hello lovely readers!

Now I’m going to be completely honest with you, I’ve been procrastinating over writing this for a while now. Actually try a whole month. I’ve done everything BUT sit down and write. I launched a website. Fiddled with Facebook. Baked muffins. Even registered my business with HMRC (yes seriously, I chose to speak to the tax office rather than write this, say whaaaat??).

And why oh why you might ask? Well basically because I was afraid of what people would think. Of me. Of my new business. Of the whole notion of coaching. Of whether I would be able to say anything that was remotely helpful to anyone. The list goes on. Ridiculous I know, but there it is. I was allowing my fears to be 100% in the driver’s seat.

Training as a coach does not make you superhuman, but it does give you access to some pretty amazing tools and techniques for overcoming your fears and limiting beliefs. In this case, I was procrastinating like crazy and procrastination can be seen as a form of self-sabotage. It can feel safer not to try at all, than to try and risk failure. So if this sounds familiar, what can you do about it?

Well one way is to think about your goal and why exactly you want to achieve it. Will it just benefit you? Or will it also benefit your family? Your partner? Your kids? Your friends? Your colleagues? Society as a whole? By making the goal about helping them, and not just about you, this can give you the motivation you need to get started.

In this TED talk, one of my favourite writers Elizabeth Gilbert beautifully explains how to get over the fear of failure and procrastination and get on with doing your life’s work, whatever that might be, by making it about something bigger than you.

So I pushed through the fear and got on with writing, because maybe just one, or two, or even several people reading this might have felt the same way and really want to learn how to get out of their own way, and get on with sharing their special gifts with the world. Maybe you're one of them.
